Attached please find a copy of FileTyper 4.1.1, the latest version of the
popular shareware type/creator editor. This should replace the earlier
version found in disk/file-typer-41.hqx.

Changes since version 4.1.0 are as follows:

* Fixed a really stupid bug in MakeAutoTyper that sometimes caused crashes
when quitting, if the help file was not installed.
* The incompatibility between FileTyper Menu and SpeedyFinder7, (and also
the upcoming Aladdin Desktop Tools), has been fixed. Thanks to Victor Tan
for his help with this. Version 4.1.1 or later of FileTyper Menu and
version 1.5.9d or later of SpeedyFinder should work properly together.
* The FileTyper Folder can be placed in the Preferences Folder as well as
the System Folder.

Here's a fun space shoot-em-up similar in concept to Sky Shadow.  No
ReadMe file, alas, but that's how I found it on a local (408) BBS -- and
that one BBS is the only place I've seen it to date.  The help gives keyboard
commands with letter keys; unlisted but also valid, on your numeric
keypad 8 goes up, 4 goes left, 6 goes right, 5 goes down and 2 drops bombs.

Do you think your Mac's interface looks flat and boring?  Do you wonder why
the push buttons are still in black and white, while the scroll bars and
windows are shaded with color tinges?  Are your eyes tired of staring at
white windows?  Does the blocky Chicago font get you down?  Maybe you just
yearn for a red stop sign.  If so, then you should try Greg's Buttons.  If
not, you should still try Greg's Buttons, and after a week or two you'll be
shocked by how plain your Mac looks without it!

Greg's Buttons is a control panel and requires System 7 and Color QuickDraw.
It works fine with both color and gray-scale monitors, and although it will
still work on a black and white screen, the effect will not be as impressive.

As of version 3.2, Greg's Buttons contains both 680x0 and PowerPC code for
optimal performance on both Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers.
(I am NOT planning to release separate Mac and Power Mac versions.)

List of Features
o Replaces the standard flat black and white push buttons, check boxes,
  and radio buttons with tasteful 3-D color ones.  These buttons are
  designed to complement the windows and scroll bars in the System 7
  interface, and in particular they use the color tints that you can
  select in the "Color" control panel.  You can choose from two styles
  of push buttons and three styles of radio buttons and check boxes.

o Lets you select the background color of dialog boxes, menus (both the
  text and background colors), and Finder windows.

o Substitutes a font of your choice (chosen two versions each of Palatino
  and Helvetica) for Chicago as your system font.

o Colorizes the mini icons in Finder list views (View by Name, etc.).
  (This feature is enabled only under Systems 7.0, 7.0.1 or 7.1.)

o Colorizes the stop sign, caution, and note alert icons.

Changes since v3.1.5
o The system patches are now "optimized" for use on the PowerMacs.
  More precisely, when run on a PowerMac, Greg's Buttons installs "fat"
  patches containing both 680x0 and PowerPC code so as to reduce
  unnecessary mode switches. Please note that although the patches are
  now fat, the Greg's Buttons file is no larger than in previous versions.

o Added the ClarisWorks "Find/Replace" dialog to the internal exclusion
  list. This fixes the problem where the box is drawn off screen, while
  allowing you to colorize the rest of the dialog boxes in ClarisWorks.

o Fixed the conflict where the 3D buttons feature behaved as it it were
  permanently turned off (this behavior also occurs when running the
  control panel "Keys!" due to an unresolvable conflict).

o Fixed the conflict with the DarkSide password entry dialog box.

o The buttons now use the same algorithm as the windows and scroll
  bars to decide when to revert to black and white.

o The Substitute System Font feature no longer mistakenly substitutes
  for Geneva 12 instead of Chicago 12 (this happened only rarely).

o When the Substitute System Font feature is turned off, it no longer
  messes with Chicago 12 (which in some cases caused slashed zeros).

o The problem with gibberish in the menu bar (and sometimes crashes)
  when launching applications has been reduced. This was triggered by
  the Menu Colorization feature and happened most often on PowerMacs.

This is a simple patch that eliminates printing of the borders
around the "small" pages in the 2-UP and 4-UP Layout Options...
Very useful for people who use those options to create
thumbnails of pages for error correction.  Now you can REALLY
save toner without those toner wasting borders.  Works ONLY with
LaserWriter version 8.1.1.  "Floppyware."

The LineShare (tm) software makes it possible for several
applications/tools to use the same serial port(s) simultaneously.
LineShare can detect the type of incoming calls and route the
call to the proper software. For fax modems, LineShare can employ the
"adaptive answering" feature supported with many modern modems, i.e.
the automatic detection of the incoming call type (fax or data).
Cooperating with VoiceMail applications, LineShare can provide Voice,
Fax and Data services on each and every line.

Generally, LineShare can be used with any modem and with any types of
incoming calls, if there is a method to detect the type of a call.
Those methods (algorithms) are programmed using the LineShare scripting
language. The scripting technology is used to support various modems
and communication applications. With LineShare scripts it is possible
to share the single line between more than two services: for example,
VoiceMail, Fax, ARA, Mailserver and BBS can share the same modem and
line.

LineShare can run only under System 7 and with server applications
that support CTB serial ports. The non-server applications (making only
outgoing calls, like terminal emulators) can be old-style ones.

LineShare is compatible with PortShare Pro: the line shared between
several local servers can be made available for non-server applications
on other computers. And more, server applications can run on remote
computers, too.

This demo version of LineShare has a limit in the number of server
sessions between system restarts.

OptionCaps is a system extension primarily for users of PowerBooks whose
keyboards sport the Caps Lock key that doesn't lock down when pressed. Hence,

   It is similar to the Caps Lock Off Extension except that it still allows you
to use the Caps Lock key - you just have to indicate that you really mean to by

I bought that game the day it came out. I must admit, the graphics and
music and play are all superb, but the program has many faults all of
which I'm sure stem from it being a PC-conversion... The soundtrack
doesn't seem to match the actors movements, sometimes the sound cuts out,
and obviously needed features are left out (eg: you can't abort the
interesting (at first) but cumbersome beginning sequence).

People: if you are having trouble with the sound cutting out, put the
"Minimum Size" memory up as high as possible. (Don't bother messing with
your CD-ROM's cache: I set mine to a meg and it had no effect.) I had to set
mine to 6500 before the sound would come out clear. This is not documented
anywhere in the manual.

A friend of mine met the guys that wrote "7th Guest." He said they rushed
the Mac conversion onto the market KNOWING it had sound problems... BAD
programmer BAD BAD programmer!

Hello everybody!

The subject says it all. In case it gets truncated and people can't read
it, I'll write it again. In FileMaker Pro, is it possible to access
individual entries in a repeating field? For example, say I have a field
with 30 repetitions and I want the 18th value. Is there some way to do
that? If so, how?

Also, when I search for records based on a repeating field, FM Pro doesn't
seem to honor the request in the way it should. Example:

Say I have 5 records that have a 4-repetition repeating field with the
values below:

record #     value 1     value 2     value 3     value 4

   1            0           1           1           2
   2            4           0           2           3
   3            3           1           0           5
   4            0           1           1           1
   5            0           1           0           2

If I use FIND and enter 0 for the 3rd value of the repeating field, I
should get *only* records 3 and 5, but actually the result is records 1, 4
and 5. Apparently, FM only searches for the first value of a repeating
field. That's odd, to be polite about it. Is there a workaround?

I have just received my upgrade to Absoft Fortran 77 for Power Macintosh.
As you might expect it is very new and still a bit flaky (after all, the
compiler operates in a Beta MPW environment) but seems to be OK for now --
if you know what you are doing. The main problem is that bad source code
can have unpredictable consequences. I haven't tried the Fx debugger that
comes with it. Source code that compiles under MacFortran II 3.3 is, in my
experience, 99% compatible, including toolbox calls; I would have said
100% but I had some some bad source code that worked just fine with earlier
compilers and it had to be cleaned up for Power Macintosh.

Here are my first comparisons of execution speed of compiled code; the
example I ran involves a lot of double-precision calculation, no toolbox
calls, no output until the end, and no disk access. The platforms chosen
were those I happened to have close at hand. Times are given as
minutes:seconds. Numerical results were identical in all cases -- in case
you thought that was too much to hope for! Compiler option -N9 causes the
program to check for keyboard (and mouse?) activity more frequently while
the program is calculating.

Compiled in MacFortran II 4.0 for Power Macintosh, with compiler option -N9;
example run on 6100/60:              00:27

Compiled in MacFortran II 4.0 for Power Macintosh, without compiler option
-N9; example run on 6100/60:         00:20

Compiled in MacFortran II 3.3 for 68030/68040,
run on Mac Classic II with FPU:      16:20

Compiled and run on a Titan by Kubota Pacific Computer, Inc., an antique
unix "super-computer",
at a time when I was the only user:  02:32

Compiled in DOS MS Fortran 5.1 with FPi option, run under SoftWindows

Folks,

	Has any LC475 user attempted to record from the audio output of a
sound system using direct hookup?  Specifically, I attempted to record
from the audio output of my VCR.  I used the same cables and connectors as
I did with my older LCIII system and was under the impression that this
would work, that it was only the microphone that needed the unusually
longer tipped mini-plug.
	For reference sake, the microphone from Apple works just fine on
my LC475. However, for better fidelity, I prefer direct line recording
for my audio clips and am trying to figure out a way to get direct line
recording to work with my 475.
	I wonder if I need that long mini-plug, rather than the
'standard' mini-plug for direct recording?  If anyone knows, please respond.
Also, if anyone knows a source where it can be found.  Radio Shack doesn't
have it.

was how to mix text (i.e. paragraphs) and an outline.  Whenever I choose

is put in outline style.  Can someone tell me how to mix paragraphs and

Just a general note to a few postings about downloading
problems...  I've had no problems with files acquired by
ftp or ftp mail from the Rice listserv.  However, files
obtained by gopher have consistently been undecodable
as is.

The trick is to open the file with a word processor and
make sure that the flag "(This file must be decoded with
Binhex 4.0)" is on its own individual line.  Then save,
quit and decode.

Possibly it would suffice to put a space before and after
the parentheses, but I haven't bothered to experiment.

Hope this helps anyone who's been having trouble.

This is normal operation. If you remember when you use FAXstf version 2.x
there is an alert box during start-up that tells you the fax software is
being initialized. That box is gone now with version 3.0, and the
initialization takes place at the time you describe, after the menu bar is
drawn. If you had an external modem you would notice the status lights
blinking at this time.

When you are using ARA you are using your modem in the data mode. FAXstf
3.0 automatically releases the fax software. When you quit ARA, the fax
software is again automatically initialized. You can see this happening if
you have the FaxStatus window open at the time that you quit ARA.

I check everything with a subject tag for software I own; so maybe other
FAXstf3.0 owners seeing this could comment on problems experienced with the
3.01b patch. I had a horrible time with this; causing all kinds of system
bombs and freezes. Actually had to reinstall my system partition from the
back-up (80Meg) to resurrect the thing. Would work for a while, then start
causing problems??  While it was working, the windows (Faxin, Faxout,
Faxhold etc.) would always default to minimum size. I would have to resize
them everytime. No noticeable improvements with this patch either? Thought
the problem might have been the 25mHz.crystal I installed in my IIsi?
Removed it, replaced the 20mHz.crystal, reinstalled FAXstf3.0, and now
everything is stable again.

Although "stable" is only relative when your constantly changing things!!

Subject: MacWrite Pro style shortcuts (R)

Jay Bienvenu asks why Claris decided to give the Command-digit shortcut
to *paragraph* styles, when MacWrite II used *Command-digit* for
character styles. He wants also to know if he can change this.

I myself feel that command-digit (rather than command-option-digit) makes
good sense, since once one learns what paragraph styles are good for, one
is likely to use them much more than character styles. Did MacWrite II
even have paragraph styles? Anyway, the MacWrite Pro interface was
completely rethought by the folks at Claris. They seem to regard MacWrite
Pro as a new program that carries forward the best in an old tradition,
rather than as a upgrade in a continuous path.

Btw, I have found that editing the menus in MacWrite Pro using ResEdit is
NOT at all as straightforward as it was the last time I edited menus in
another program. I'm not the world's greatest ResEdit whiz, but I found
it impossible to assign a key-equivalent for a few commands I wanted. And
overriding the built-in shortcuts with QuicKeys might be tricky. Could be
done with AppleScript, I suspect, but would be too slow to be worth it.

Hello All!

(I am reposting this because I received one bounce...)

OK.  I am still having problems with my IIsi.  Initially I tried to run
an upgrade from 7.0.1 to 7.1.  After rebooting I had a lot of bad f-line
instruction errors and "error 97" errors.  Even after removing all inits I
still
had the errors.  So , I performed a complete install clean for my IIsi.  It
still died.  I had to run and "Install for any Macintosh".  Finally the system
came up - initially.

Setup
Mac IIsi, 17MB RAM, internal 80MB drive External Toshiba CDROM
MIRROR 14" Mutli-Sync VGA plugged in to on-board video. DataDesk extended
keyboard

I tried to install my regular set of inits:      ATM, QuickTime 1.6, DriveCD
(latest), DOS Mounter, DeskPict, After Dark ver.2w, and Apple's defaults.  I
took all of them out and still had problems (see below).  I came up sometimes,
but especially bombed with the larger inits (QuickTime 1.6 and DriveCD).

Problems:

"System : bad F_line instruction"
" Finder: bad F_line instruction"
"System : error 97 occurred"
Also errors 11, 15, 3, 1
"Foreign File Access : bad F_line instruction" Sad Mac :  000000F, 00000002
Not enough memory to run <app>   <--- with 17MB RAM visible to
the Mac, I doubt this
is correct.

When I boot from a floppy I do not get ANY errors, and I can run all of my apps
>From the hard drive.  This makes me think that the sad mac errors and possible
SCSI problems are false.  If you have ANY hints at all please contact me.  If
there are lists of compatible apps and utilities please point me to them. I
have
already tried SOS-APPLE and got the "test all of your inits" line.  I did and
when you have only one init loading , and it's the brand new QuickTime, there
is
a problem here that apple does not even know about.

Please reply to me directly so I don't miss anything.  Info-MAc distribution
has
been flaky of late.

William Krauthammer pointed me toward PowerBar [gui/power-bar-111.hqx}
which does all the things I wanted and which LaunchPad lacks.
So far it seems not to conflict with the zillion inits I run,
except that I found it convenient to turn off its hot spot feature
to avoid getting in the way of Applicon.

You recently placed a game on your FTP site called "Tarrtha"
I think that it may be a better Idea to place it as

"Rescue 1.6 - Irish Gaelic Version"

due to the fact that it is the same game except for the fact that
some one just translated the text to Irish Gaelic.  I am in frequent
contact with the author (Tom Spreen) of Rescue 1.6 and I know that
he is aware of this translation and in fact does not mind it.  I
just think it may clear up some confusion and possibly save someone
the trouble of downloading the same game twice.

The reason I haven't been back with the answer to concatenating the

Subject: What is the SIMMS config of PowerMac 6100?

What is the arrangement of SIMMS slots and memory capacities thereof on
the 6100?  I know it comes stock with 8 MB RAM (on the motherboard?) and
can be expanded to as much as 72 MB (which means 64 MB worth of SIMMS +
8 MB on the motherboard?).  Is that 4 slots, each of which can be filled
with a chip of 8 or 16 MB?  What size chip gets put into how many slots
out of how many total slots when one buys the 16 MB option?  And if one
eventually wanted to expand to more than 16 MB, what combinations of
chips, singly or in pairs, would be possible?  If one bought the 16 MB
configuration and then, someday way off in the future wanted to expand
to the max of 72 MB, would one have to pull out a relatively small-
capacity chip and replace it with a larger-capacity chip?  A diagram
might be useful.  So far the MacWarehouse and other memory-vendors do
not provide this information as they do for other Mac models.

PS--what is the minimum chip speed?  60ns?  70?  50?
